Finding My Voice

I just completed a photography course, with the intention to find and embrace my unique style.

I thought, maybe the ability to describe my voice might somehow make me better at what I do.

As part of the course, I had the impossible task of choosing just a few photos to best represent me. But I have 1000’s of photos that make my heart sing, I thought, as I tried to narrow it down.

Is using a straw for the first time more special than the first day riding a scooter outside? Is a visit from a grandparent who lives far away more important than the first week being home from the maternity ward? Is the first week eating solids more special than learning to swing unaided?

The contents of an image is so special and personal to the family it belongs, regardless of how insignificant it may seem to an onlooker, that its importance can’t be weighed against others. And putting all the images from a session together - just multiplies this effect.

So instead of selecting individual ‘portfolio worthy’ images to represent my voice —  I selected these 10 images below, all from the same session, because this represents why I take photos. Not for awards or accolades or for the ‘perfect shot’, but because, together, these images contain what is even more important; a story of life, fleeting moments of connection and emotion, a space to pause and appreciate all that one has, this moment in time, and a tangible record of it to cherish later.

It is not the strength of individual photos that defines me, but rather it is the cohesiveness of the photo gallery as a whole.

And it was in this realisation, that just maybe, I got a step closer, to finding my photographic voice.
